Sodding - A perfect lawn, NOW
The major (and sometimes overriding) advantage of sod is the fact that it provides an "instant" lawn. If the homeowner is prepared to ensure ample watering, sod can be laid at any time during the summer months. Watering during the initial 3-4 week period after laying is absolutely critical in order to ensure proper root development.
Not all types of grass are suitable for use as sod. Indeed, for lawns, only Kentucky Bluegrass is used. Bentgrass, because of its unique low-growth characteristics, is commonly used on golf greens but is not practical (nor economical) for use on home lawns. All sod sold for application to home lawns in Ontario is made up of Kentucky Bluegrass. But that's a good thing. It's hardy for our Canadian winters, it wears well, and it's beautiful.
Kentucky Bluegrass, although beautiful and winter-hardy is quite temperamental and does require a good deal of attention. Its root system, unless it receives deep watering, tends to run close to the surface where it is highly susceptible to attack by disease and insect.
Sod is more expensive than seeding since the cost must include the grower's expenses along with transportation costs. Although sodding can be a do-it-yourself project, it is a back-breaking ordeal and, if done improperly, can be very difficult to fix.
